...but this question has been driving me crazy for literally years.

Does anyone here know what kind of sounds platypus make? {And for extra credit, what is the official plural of platypus?}

My encyclopedia uses the word "platypuses". Also...

"The adults make a low growling sound."

I went to an Australian site that said they made many vocalizations, including a low growling noise when threatened. So how about when they're happy?

Well, I just found a site that said they do NOT make any calls or vocalizations other than the soft growling. And that can only be heard at close distances.

It also said they have been heard to make a sneezing sound, again at close distances, but apparently this sneezing is only to clear water from their nostrils.

Webber told me that he usually just cheers when he's happy.

He also said he doesn't growl when he's threatened. Usually the cocking of his shotgun scares off most predators.
